May Brewery Feature: Palmetto Brewing Co.
We take pride in keeping local brews on tap here at Charleston Beer Works and this month, we’re featuring the local Charleston brewery, Palmetto Brewing Co.! All month long, we’ll be serving up pairing recommendations with our menu items and their awesome brews.
With roots dating back to the mid-1800s, the original Palmetto Brewery was located on the Charleston peninsula at the corner of Market and Hayne Streets. The brewery operated until 1913 when the looming threat of Prohibition was too much for the owner to continue working through.
More than 70 years later, in 1993, Ed Falksenstein and his friend Louis Bruce began brewing commercially on Huger Street in downtown Charleston as Palmetto Brewing Company, resurrecting the name made famous by the original brewery in the late 1800s.
In early 2018, Palmetto was acquired by the Pyatt family and merged with Catawba Brewing Company of North Carolina. Palmetto and Catawba now operate collaboratively, with the original Palmetto Huger Street location serving as the primary draft production center for both brands.
So this month, grab a $4 local draft, like one of their limited-release beers, Raspberry Rewind, a raspberry wheat ale or their classic Lowcountry Lager and enjoy Happy Hour from 4-7PM!
